FAQ

An ACR is a medium-voltage protective device designed to automatically interrupt and re-establish current flow on an electrical distribution network. Its primary function is to protect the system by clearing temporary faults and restoring service without manual intervention.
When a fault occurs, the ACR opens to interrupt the current. It then automatically recloses after a preset time delay. If the fault was temporary, power is restored. If the fault is permanent, the ACR executes a sequence (typically 1-3 trip-and-reclose operations) and then locks out (stays open) to isolate the faulty section.
To significantly improve system reliability and power quality. Over 80% of faults in overhead lines are temporary. ACRs ensure that power is quickly restored after these temporary faults, minimizing outage time and reducing operational costs related to manual fault clearing.
1. Vacuum Interrupter/Switching Mechanism: To safely interrupt the current and extinguish the arc. 2. Current Sensors (CTs): To detect fault currents. 3. Microprocessor Control Unit (Controller): The intelligence that stores settings, executes the sequence, and handles communication. 4. Operating Mechanism: The mechanical/magnetic part that opens and closes the interrupter.
Routine functional checks (e.g., verifying communication, battery health, and settings) should be done periodically (e.g., annually). Full mechanical and electrical testing, including checks on the vacuum interrupter and control unit, should follow the manufacturer’s recommendations, typically every 3–5 years or after a high-energy fault operation.
Yes. The programmed reclosing sequence is the mechanism. It tries to reclose a few times (assuming the fault is temporary). If the fault persists after the final attempt, the ACR concludes it is a permanent fault (like a broken conductor) and locks out to isolate the section, requiring manual repair.
Primarily Overcurrent Faults, including single-phase-to-ground faults and three-phase faults. Modern ACRs also offer advanced protection features like Sensitive Earth Fault (SEF) and Negative Phase Sequence (NPS) protection for greater security.
Yes. Most modern ACRs use vacuum interrupters for arc extinction. This design is highly environmentally friendly as it eliminates the need for insulating mediums like SF6 gas or oil, which can pose environmental and maintenance challenges.
ACRs are predominantly used in medium-voltage (MV) distribution systems, typically ranging from 11 kV up to 38 kV, though models for slightly higher voltages also exist. They are critical where overhead lines are exposed to environmental factors.
Modern ACR controllers support standard utility protocols, most commonly DNP3 and IEC 60870-5-104. This enables seamless integration with SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) and smart grid monitoring systems for remote control and data logging.
